Biography
Roger Groff was born in December 1946 in San Antonio, TX. He began guitar lessons at Fest Music Company on Main Avenue at age 10. His first talent show was December 1958. He continued to play and sing at different venues until 1965 when he and a good friend, Al, started a country music band called the Country Drifters. The band members were Al Michalczak on lead guitar, Leslie Fraiser on steel guitar, Butch Kanoodle on drums and Roger on rhythm guitar and vocals.
Soon the band was playing in Castroville at The Spindletop Stop, The Palamino Clubs, Rudes at Median Lake, Brauns Hall in Leon Valley and Smithson Valley Hall in Bulverde.
In 1968 Tommy Hill of Stop Records invited Roger to record for him in Nashville, Tennessee. The first recording session was on May 10, 1968. The musicians on the session included Pete Drake on steel guitar, Jack Drake on base guitar and direct from The Grand Old Opry, the Four Guys that backed up Roger on harmony.
45 RPM records soon followed. Roger worked with Tommy Hill on recording sessions until 1975. Roger was featured on the Midwestern Hayride television show in 1970.
One 45 RPM (Willie Really Sounded Good Last Night) went to number one on radio station WHOA in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This set up a tour of Puerto Rico in March and April of 1974. Roger played with many artists and bands in the 1980’s .He performed on a show called Tommy Hill Appreciation Night with many well known artists. Tommy recorded this show and returned to Nashville Tennessee with the recording.
Roger still performs occasionally with George Chambers and the Country Gentlemen in and around San Antonio, Texas.
